Nobu Hotel Shoreditch

The Nobu Hotel Shoreditch is renowned restaurateur Nobu’s first European venture into hospitality, and occupies a 100m long frontage along a quiet Shoreditch street.

The design draws on the vibrant cultural and industrial context, and enjoys the site’s linearity. An intimate landscaped garden, at the site’s eastern edge is articulated into terraces, seating and planting, and provides natural light and access to the generous lower restaurant space. At its centre, a mature tree forms a focal point and far-reaching visual anchor. The hotel’s five storeys above are fractured into angular, fair-faced concrete balconies which, combined with cantilevered Cor-Ten beams, form a seemingly frayed edge to the North façade. Six protruding slab edges, penetrate the glazing and accentuate the horizontality of the volume. Utilising innovative printed, layered glass, the highly reflective façade balances privacy and exposure, and interacts with its surroundings through the interplay of colour, reflection and light.

The scheme was approved by London Borough of Hackney in 2012.
